We’ve seen this before with this client, who we refer to as EA LLC. They run a Mac Mini server (named “highland”) which is used by their staff who login as a user named “Front Desk”. (There are issues with that setup, but that is outside the scope of this post.)
Last year this computer’s external hard drive (named EADataBackups) became disconnected, but we didn’t know about it for 3 months, until we were called out for an unrelated issue. As it turns out, the Time Machine backup wasn’t working, nor was their MacPractice backups. The computer was busy fussing, but the staff who used the computer ignored the errors, as it was “someone else’s job”.
Now that we have the Watchman Monitoring Client installed, we are the first to know that their backup drive needs some attention. If history is our guide, our client will be grateful to see us and relieved to know that we’re keeping an eye on their equipment.
