At it’s heart, Watchman Monitoring is all about making sure our Subscribers’ Clients are fully backed up. We have a principle not to affect the client computers: to have as little a footprint as possible.
With our most recent update, there is one action the Watchman Client can be configured to perform: trigger a Time Machine backup on a daily interval.
Time Machine’s backup is great, but it has some pretty serious side effects: it’s hourly run can hinder performance, hourly backups of large databases can consume far too much disk space, and on Mac OS X server, Time Machine backups have a habit of kicking out AFP users.
Watchman Client 3.4 includes a solution to this problem.
- Setup Time Machine to your desired destination
- Turn off Time Machine in the System PreferencePane
- Use the Advanced button by the Time Machine interval to set the number of days between backups, and the time of day to run.
By setting the interval to 1, and the time to 2AM, the Watchman Client will trigger a backup every day on the first run after 2AM.
If there is a problem with Time Machine completing, you will be notified based on the number of days specified in the Client’s primary setting.
We hope you enjoy this feature, and it can help you keep your clients’ computers and servers backed up, without the hourly bother of standard Time Machines.
